Anthony leaned heavily against the kitchen counter. His breathing was ragged. He had worked eighty hours a week in commercial roofing for ten years, his knuckles calloused, his back aching every single evening, just to build a secure life for him and Olivia. He had worshipped the ground she walked on. Whenever Olivia bought a new designer handbag or booked a weekend spa trip, Anthony would beam with pride, telling everyone at family barbecues that his wife deserved the very best.

To discover that the woman he adored had stolen his life savings and forged his name to fuel a secret spending addiction was a betrayal that gutted him down to the marrow.

“Where is she?” Anthony asked quietly. The anger was gone, replaced by a cold, terrifying stillness.

“She probably went to your mother’s house,” Shawn said quickly, his voice trembling. “Anthony, man, listen to me. Liv loves you. She was terrified of disappointing you. That’s why she hid it. She thought she could win the money back on the market and replace it before you noticed—”

“Shut up, Shawn,” Anthony whispered.

Shawn blinked. “What?”

“Shut your mouth,” Anthony repeated, lifting his head. His eyes were bloodshot, burning with tears he refused to let fall. “You helped her lie to me. For eight months, you looked me in the eye every Sunday at dinner, drank my beer, asked me about my work, knowing she was draining our future into the gutter.”

“I was trying to keep your marriage together!” Shawn pleaded.

“No,” Anthony said, shaking his head slowly. “You were keeping her safe from consequences. Just like you always do. Just like your parents taught you to do.”

Anthony turned toward the door.

“Anthony, wait!” Shawn took a step to follow him, but Anthony spun around with such sudden ferocity that Shawn recoiled.

“Don’t come near me,” Anthony said, his voice deadly low. “And tell your sister that if she isn’t at our house by eight o’clock tonight to hand over every single bank statement, credit card, and laptop she owns, I’m calling the police and reporting the fraud myself.”

The screen door banged shut behind him. The sound of his truck engine roared to life in the driveway, gravel crunching under heavy tires as he sped away into the twilight.

The kitchen fell dead silent again.

Only the sound of the dripping faucet broke the stillness.

I stood there, covered in drying strawberry cream, my skin feeling sticky and cold.

Shawn slowly turned around to look at me. His hands were clenched into tight fists at his sides, his chest heaving with fury. The spineless diplomat was gone; in his place was a husband who felt cornered, exposed, and humiliated.

“Are you happy now?” Shawn hissed, stepping toward me. “Are you satisfied? You just blew up my sister’s entire life. You ruined their marriage. All because of a stupid piece of cake!”

I looked at him. Really looked at him.

For seven years, I had made excuses for Shawn. I told myself he was caught in the middle. I told myself he was just a good brother who loved his family too much. I endured Olivia’s snide remarks about my weight, my cooking, my background, and my parenting, always letting Shawn convince me to ‘be the bigger person’ to keep family dinners peaceful.

I saw the truth now, clear as day. Shawn wasn’t caught in the middle. He had chosen his side a long time ago.

And it wasn’t mine.

“Pack a bag, Shawn,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

He stopped in his tracks, blinking as if he hadn’t heard me correctly. “What?”

“You heard me,” I said, pointing toward the stairs. “Pack your clothes, take your car, and get out of this house.”

“This is my house too!” he shouted, his voice cracking with rage. “You cannot kick me out of my own home!”

“The deed to this house is in my name, purchased with the equity from my condo before we ever signed a marriage license,” I reminded him, staring into his widening eyes. “And if you aren’t out the door in twenty minutes, I will call the sheriff’s department, show them the security footage of your sister physically assaulting me on my property, and explain to them how you’ve been assisting her in wire fraud.”

Shawn’s mouth fell open. He tried to speak, but nothing came out.

Twenty minutes later, Shawn’s silver sedan backed down the driveway.
